In the present, in her bed in the house she shared with Barneyâs daughter, Ginny sat up abruptly and rubbed in agitation at her hair. How on earth had it got to this? That she, a mature woman with a grown-up daughter, was tossing and turning in bed, worked up into a sweat with feelings sheâd really rather not be having, over the man who had got her into this predicament in the first place? And the more she thought about the previous night in the restaurant, his casual charm, the touching of her cheek, the kissing of her hand, the careless kiss on the lips that had sent her into a turmoil of confusion, the more she felt he had been flirting with her. And what a result. Her body hadnât felt this warm, this sensitive, this alive, for many years.
âOh my God.â
This could not happen. She had to put a stop to it, for everybodyâs sake. She had to make an excuse to see Barney and attempt to control the situation. She had some photographs for him. That would do nicely. She got up, stamped across the bedroom floor and found her handbag. In a pocket was the piece of paper where sheâd scribbled down the mobile number heâd given her. She stabbed out the number and sat on the edge of the bed, closing her eyes for concentration.
âBarney? Itâs Ginny. Iâd like to see you.â
âGinny!â He paused. âIs everything all right?â
âYes, everythingâs fine.â
âIs it Marie? Has something happened?â
âNo, itâs not Marie. I just need to talk to you. And â er â Iâve had the photos you chose developed. Theyâre ready for you. When can you make it?â
She heard him shuffling about, perhaps looking at a diary or maybe just absorbing her strident tone. âI can do Friday evening. Are you free?â
âI can be free then.â
âIâll come down to you.â
âNo, Iâll come to London. We can meet somewhere.â
âWell, come to my house then. It saves hanging about in the cold.â She heard him breathing, could practically feel him frowning. âAre you sure everythingâs all right?â
âYes,â she said edgily. âWhere do you live?â
âGinny, have you changed your mind about all this? About me getting to know Marie? If so, please warn me, because if all this is going to disappear again . . .â
âNo, itâs not that.â She took a deep breath and softened her tone, sympathy for him creeping up again. âItâs all right Barney, I just thought youâd like to have some photos of Marie after all this time without any. And we probably should talk again.â
âYes,â he said after another pause. âYes, I think youâre right. Well, I live in Wimbledon.â He gave her his address and directions from the tube. âThatâs if youâre sure you want to come to London.â
âItâll be fine. I can be there by seven.â
âIâll see you at my house at seven then.â
After sheâd rung off, Ginny found that her hands were trembling. She stared at them, troubled, then ran herself a hot bath, piling bath foam into the water.
